With Charles Koch threatening everything we hold dear – public schools, the Post Office, the Supreme Court, the VA, Social Security, our climate – progressives in Tucson need to stand together to show strength and solidarity!

Let’s do exactly that on this year’s National Kochbusters Day! Go to 2100 E Speedway

On Oct. 28 from 4:00-5:30 p.m. [just six days before Election Day] Kochs Off Campus! is organizing a multi-issue, get-out-the-vote, sign-holding action in Tucson!  We will gather on the south side of Speedway from Campbell to the Sun Station Post Office. For everyone’s safety at this demonstration we will practice social distancing and wear masks. To show our solidarity and unity, we will display signs championing the progressive causes we all care about so deeply.

A variety of Tucson community groups have already signed up to join Kochs Off Campus! in this year’s Kochbusters Day action! Including:

RedForEd, Veterans For Peace, Jobs With Justice, Progressive Democrats of America, Represent Us, and the Green Party.  Co-sponsors include the Pima Area Labor Federation, the Tucson Peace Center, and the national group Unkoch My Campus.

If there are any progressive groups you know that would like to participate in this Kochbusters Day 2020 action, we urge you to invite them!  If they want to be involved, please let us know by responding to this email. You can follow National Kochbusters Day Tucson on our Facebook page!

Kochs Off Campus! (KOC!) will hold its third annual “Kochbusters Day” on Wednesday, October 28.  Activities include a webinar at noon and a socially-distanced, masked, “all issues” stand-out demonstration with signs between the Campbell/Speedway intersection and the Sun Station Post Office from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.

“We will ‘Poke the Kochs’ by exposing the harm they are doing to our society and by encouraging people to VOTE to undo the damage the Koch network does daily to our democracy,” said Betts Putnam-Hidalgo, a member of KOC!.

In the noon webinar, Professor Alex Hertel-Fernandez of Columbia University will explain how three Koch-sponsored entities – the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the State Policy Network (SPN), and Americans for Prosperity (AFP) – have worked together to turn the state of Arizona into an all but wholly-owned subsidiary of Koch Industries.  Alex will then suggest how to turn this situation around.  Alex’s presentation will be followed by a panel discussion among David Armiak (Research Director at the Center for Media and Democracy) and others.  They will provide a national context and show how ALEC, SPN, and AFP have driven the harmful privatization of our public sector.  Co-sponsored by Unkoch My Campus.

In the “all issues” demonstration from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., more than ten progressive Tucson organizations will hold signs and banners along Speedway from Campbell to the Sun Station Post Office.  Highlights will include:

  • RedForEd at the southeast corner of Speedway and Campbell urging voters to pass Prop 208.  This measure would fund public schools with a tax on only the super-rich – exactly contrary to Koch ideology.
  • Kochs Off Campus! at the southwest corner of Speedway/Campbell protesting the presence of the Center for the Philosophy of Freedom (a Koch propaganda generator) on the University of Arizona campus.
  • Veterans for Peace Chapter 13 at the northwest corner of Speedway/Campbell protesting the Koch push to privatize VA hospitals.
  • The Pima Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, at the Sun Station Post Office protesting the Koch-backed effort to privatize the Post Office.
