Rex Scott has been part of the Pima County Community since 1991.
A teacher, assistant principal, and principal in the local area, Scott, who also served as a City Council Member when he lived in Athens, Ohio, wants to take this professional experience and utilize it as the next District One Pima County Board Supervisor.
If elected this November, Scott, a former Republican and Independent before becoming a Democrat 16 years ago, vows to be a bipartisan public servant who is a “fair, objective representative for all the people in our changing district.”
His priorities on the Board would be to help:
- “Steer Pima County through the COVID 19 Pandemic and its recovery.
- Fostering economic development and business expansion
- Fixing and maintaining county roads and infrastructure
- Supporting law enforcement and first responders
- Advocating for quality early childhood education for all our kids
- Prioritizing customer service and efficient operations
- Working with other jurisdictions to increase the stock of affordable housing
- Ensuring that our environment and natural resources are protected.”
Scott’s Republican opponent for the Supervisor seat is Steve Spain. He lacks the public sector experience of Scott and is regarded as being fringe right than right of center on the political spectrum.

Rex Scott graciously took the time to discuss his candidacy.
The questions and his responses are below.
1) Please tell the voters three reasons they should pick you over Spain.
“This is an extraordinary time for our county and world with COVID 19. Dealing with the pandemic will the main preoccupation of Pima County for the next four years.”
- “I have 19 years of experience as an appointed public servant as a school administrator and four others as a city council member and co-chair of the city charter commission in both Athens, Ohio, and Tucson, Arizona.”
- “I can offer 23 years of public sector experience in this time of transition and urgent need and Mr. Spain has zero.”
- “I am somebody who has committed his life to public service including my time as a teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal. At these positions, I built rapport, trust, caring relationships, and respect with thousands of families. Half my career was spent in service to schools within District One.”
- “I will honor all voices and consider all points of view before reaching a position. I have been a Republican, Independent, and Democrat. District One is the only purple district out of the five supervisorial districts with 54,000 Republicans, 51,000 Democrats, and close to 40,000 Independents (which include some Green Party and Libertarians). I am better suited than my opponent, who is very conservative and out of step with the times to represent the most purple district in Pima County, especially during these trying circumstances.”
2) Please tell the voters at least three issues you feel are important to pursue if you are elected to the Pima County Board of Supervisors?
- “I will work with my colleagues in combatting the Coronavirus and getting through the recovery from it. My experience with public sector budgeting will be helpful in this regard.”
- “The condition of our roads in Pima County, especially in District One. We have the highest percentage of poor or failed roads and the current board passed a program last November that will spend $526 million over ten years to bring the roads up to par. The role of the Board will be to review that program, make sure progress is being made, and direct the Department of Transportation to continually emphasize preventive maintenance.”
- “Have the county play a bigger role in giving access to early childhood education regardless of income so brain development and kindergarten readiness can be addressed for all children, regardless of family income. If the county takes a leadership role in providing these opportunities to our young people, schools and non-profits will come to the table to assist.”
3) Is there anything you would like the voter to know about you or your candidacy that has not been asked in the first two questions?
“I will work to ensure that all services and supports provided by county government to its residents are done so at the highest level of equity and customer service, with respect for use of the public revenues entrusted to us.”
